    • Cork - a Lonely Planet top city? Y or N?

Cork City has been named as one of Lonely Planet's top cities in the world to visit in 2010. No other Irish city gets a mention.  Is this reasonable?

The munster city has been listed alongside Abu Dhabi, Charleston (South Carolina, USA), Cuenca (Ecuador), Istanbul, Kyoto, Lecce in Italy, Sarajevo, Singapore and Vancouver. The guide said Cork was now “at the top of its game: sophisticated, vibrant and diverse”.

Have you any idea why Lonely Planet would choose Cork above any other world city to include in its fifth annual edition of The Best in Travel 2010?

That's a joke. Cork is just a place to collect the water from the hills around it. Horrible little place.

How about the top 5 things to do in Cork.

1. English market is in my top 5 - it reminds me of the fabulous food market in Barcelona. Indoors, lots of lovely places to eat and lots of lovely food stalls. Fantastic meat. And I'm loving the fact that the asians are in the market too, flogging cheap fruit and veg.

2. Cork Jazz Festival. If you like Jazz it's amazing and if you don't it's amazing. The atmosphere on the streets and pubs is somethign else.

I can't think of anything else great about Cork... but I've only been to the city twice and one of those times was to the festival

They got it bang on there I say!  Being a foreign visitor to Ireland, I can't understand why everyone goes on about Dublin.  It's overpriced and the people aren't anywhere near as friendly as they are outside of the capital.

I had a ball in Cork - the people are full of character and the nightlife was fantasic.  The scenery is amazing too!

Cork is under-rated although in my experience a little rough around the edges. The surrounding towns and villages seem much more Oirish. There is a wonderful element to the culture of Corkonians which is a little dangerous yet exciting.

If you have got kids then don't miss Fota Wildlife Park. Its 15 mins by car or 20 by train. Really close by. It's a fantastic day out.

Try the Coal Quay area of Cork. It's just at the end of Patrick Street to the right.

Lovely old area with old worldy craft shops and a beautiful bar, Bodega in an old warehouse.

Also try the McCurtain St for bars - it's just a stone's throw from the Metropole Hotel.
